Every year, The Pantone Color Institute selects a ‘colour of the year’. The colour that they choose – through careful consideration and trend analysis by their colour experts (what a job!) – often goes on to influence much of the following year’s design, product development and, further down the line, our own purchasing decisions.
Everything from fashion and home furnishings to industrial design and packaging is affected: just compare 2017‘s colour of the year – ’Greenery' – with the amount of foliage that popped up on your Instagram feed for the 18 months that followed.
Earlier this month the Institute announced that 2019‘s colour of the year is ’Living Coral‘, describing it as ’an animating and life-affirming coral hue with a golden undertone that energises and enlivens with a softer edge.'
This energy and vibrancy certainly fits with the trends we are seeing in event design for 2019. Bright and bold, cheerful and rich – colour is an essential this year… a definite swing away from the cool, calm greys that characterised the middle years of this decade.
Along with coral, clients are favouring saturated hues of orange, yellow, emerald green, burgundy and purple for an opulent look that retains a nod to the natural through flowers and fabric – but is a little more fairy-tale than foraged.
It is so much fun to add a splash of colour to bring your event alive. One of my favourite design staples is brightly coloured ribbon. You can use it in so many simple, clever ways: using little glass bottles with a brightly colour ribbon knotted around it works a treat for holding single stems; or if you want to really go for it, use several different colours co-ordinated with a few flowers in each bottle. Don’t forget to balance out with some stunning foliage – deep green and sage-grey leaves really make those colours pop!
If you want to take it one step further, steer away from standard white table linen and go for something more dramatic. Brightly coloured napkins on white plates will give your table design real impact, especially on a dark tablecloth.
If you’re a fan of colour, like me, 2019 is the time to have fun with it. The more vibrant the explosion, the better!
