Each year, the biggest names in UK cycling gather at the Hurlingham Club to raise money for Action Medical Research. In 2019, Clownfish Events went along for the ride.

The brief

A black tie dinner at one of London’s most prestigious private members’ clubs, with the opportunity to rub shoulders with cycling legends, whilst raising funds for research into childhood illness. This high profile event demanded the absolute best in technical production.

From accessible staging, to mission-critical sound and lighting, to after-dinner entertainment, our engineers were there to ensure smooth pedalling right to the finish line.

Our approach

More than just a dinner, this event was designed to allow these philanthropic guests to get up close and personal with their cycling heroes.

We started by constructing an accessible, 24 x 8′ stage with a ramp for wheelchair access at the front of the room; then added a branded, draped backdrop to set the scene and smart sofas for hosting cosy, laid-back interviews.

Our engineers installed a full sound system – speakers, sound desks and microphones – to ensure nobody missed a word; and created stunning lighting design to transform the stage and dining area with washes of colour. A couple of strategically placed confetti canons were the finishing touch.

In large venues like this one, it’s sometimes tricky to set up the room so that everyone can see. We recommended a live video relay to large LED screens, supported by a film crew. Clownfish has all of this expertise in-house, which made life a lot easier for the event organisers.

With the formalities over, interviews complete, and the auction hammer down for the final time, the guests got a chance to let their hair down. We set up a DJ booth and provided a professional DJ to spin some tunes into the small hours.
